Grand Slams 2008: A Look Back

What a year it was for grand slam tennis. With the last major of the year drawing to a close in New York, I think this is the perfect time to look back at the year that was. Let’s begin after the cut, shall we? Read the rest of this entry »

Order Restored

In a highly entertaining encounter, Serena Williams took out Jelena Jankovic, 6-4, 7-5, in the final of the U.S. Open. JJ had four set points in the second set, but Serena stepped it up. The win propels Serena back to the number one ranking, after a nearly six year absence. It feels like order has been restored to the top of the women’s game. Now that I think about it, as the last major of the year comes to a close, I realize that even in this year of questionable rankings and injuries, the four best women on the tour took home the four majors. As for Jelena, I really don’t know if she’ll ever find herself in the final of a major again, but if she does, she really needs to work on her trophy presentation etiquette. Interrupting Mary Carillo to ask how much her check was for wasn’t very classy.

Congrats, Serena!

Serena: The Voice of Millions

Serena on the upcoming all-Williams quarterfinal:

“It sucks.”

Just saying what everyone is thinking, I suppose.

A Day in the Life of Serena’s Hitting Partner

This is what daily life is like for Aleksander Bajin, Serena Williams’ servant hitting partner:

  • Arrive early at the courts, usually by bus.
  • Warm up with Williams for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Make sure she has help stretching, from him or her physiotherapist.
  • Make sure her rackets are strung correctly and her grips are just so.

Also, he “books the practice courts, make sure she has the food she wants and just try to keep her happy.”

Serena’s reason for keeping him around? “He’s a Libra and I’m a Libra,” she said.

Williams vs. Mannings: Oreo Style

The real competition here is, which commercial will be overplayed more, this one or Maria Sharapova’s new Canon spot. I think this is the only thing Maria can beat the Williams at.

Photo Op: Nike Block Party in NYC

Some of our favorite tennis ballers attended Nike’s block party in New York City last night.

Serena Williams blogged after the event: Nike closed the entire BLOCK to put this on! I mean only Nike! I love them!!! They had fake grass on the street so it looked like a park in the middle of the street! There were sooooo many people out there trying to get in! It was INSANE!!!!!”

Serena met up with Roger Federer and Spike Lee and also blogged about that: Anyways I had a fun conversation with Spike and I think he is fab! As u all know I love acting so I hope we can work together one day… That would be awesome!!! lso I talked to Roger Federer! He’s so awesome! We were talking about the gold medals that we won and each of our experiences. It was cool to know that he felt the same way I did about winning a gold medal. It is such an amazing experience playing for your country and being able to bring back gold. He’s fun and so awesome! Clearly my fav player….” Sorry, Rafa, I guess you’re just not fun and awesome enough for Serena.

Steering clear of Serena was Maria Sharapova, who made up for her last event’s fashion mishap by rocking this cute outfit.

What Happened?

I go to sleep with the prospect of a Federer-Nadal and Venus-Serena gold medal match looming and a wake up to these surprising results from Beijing. Serena lost. Fed lost. Serena’s gold medal campaign was ended by Sydney 2000 silver medalist, Elena Dementieva. Serena was up a set and 4-2 before Dementieva stormed back and took it 6-3 in the third. Seems like Elena has Serena’s number, she’s won in their last two encounters.

Even more surprising was James Blake’s upset of Roger Federer, in straight sets, too. Normally, I would be upset about this, but during the Olympics I seem to go all patriotic for some reason. R. Fed’s forehand was an unforced error machine and his serve was unreliable. Blake pretty much hit him off the court. Now, James is guaranteed to be in contention for a medal.

Crazy sport, tennis is.

Serena Glams It Up in Men’s Fitness Magazine

Serena Williams makes an appearance in the latest issue of Men’s Fitness Magazine. Here’s what Serena had to say to the mag:

On finding guys who can keep up with her fitness level…
“I’m attracted to guys who are really athletic, so it’s never a problem. To be honest, I absolutely hate working out, I hate going to the gym. I do it only ’cause it’s my job, and I think about it like, OK, other people’s jobs are to go to the office nine to five, and my job is to go the gym and look sexy. That’s the only thing that gets me through it.”

On her favorite physical part of her body…
“I love my smile. My smile and my cleavage. [Laughs] I think they go really well together.” [Laughs]

On guys being intimidated to date her because of her athletic status…
“It definitely makes it harder, which is not really cool because I”m like the girl next door. My attitude is so relaxed and so chill, and what you see is what you get. I guess sometimes people get intimidated, not by my being Serena Williams, but just more or less by the things that I’ve accomplished and the things that I might have in my life. I think for any woman who is strong and supports herself, that tends to be a problem.”

On what she looks for in a guy…
“I’m a sucker for gentlemen, I’m old fashioned. I’m a girl who believes that a guy should take the lead. They should open doors, close doors. I also look for someone who has a good relationship with their mom. My mom always said, ‘Look for someone whom you can laugh with, ’cause it means you can have fun with that person.’ ”

On major turnoffs…
“Guys should never grab me. I hate when guys grab girls. I think it’s so rude. I’ve been grabbed numerous times. Don’t touch. I”m not your property. I absolutely hate that.”

On what she’d be doing if not playing tennis…
“I love acting and writing, so I would probably either be a struggling actress or a writer.”

China, Spy on the Williams All You Want

China has allegedly been monitoring the Williams sisters training sessions. And Serena and Venus could care less. Frankly, China can spy on them all they want, it really isn’t going to help them beat the sisters. This is presumably being done for the doubles competition, where the Chinese have a better chance of medaling.

“We don’t know. We just follow that yellow ball, we don’t look around,” said Serena in response to question.”We’re out there, we’ve been practising the last two days together. The only thing I see is the ball or whoever I’m practising with at the time,” she added.

Well, if the Williams are healthy, they’re taking the doubles gold, no matter who is spying on them.

Serena: Best Blogger on Tour

Serena Williams is probably the best tennis player on the WTA tour, but she is definitely the best blogger on the WTA tour. Though her blog entries are few and far between, her latest is a hoot. Serena tells an amusing anecdote about how she broke her phone:

“For an embarrassing story the day I did go to the beach I had to go to the bathroom really bad, and I ran to the bathroom forgetting that my phone was in my back pocket, well needless to say it fell in the toilet, and I did not see it until… well lets just say I was really relieved that I did not have to do the number two!!!!! OMG I was so embarrassed and not only that, they always tell you to back up your info, and back up your contacts on your compuer, and I actually DID back up my contacts on the computer. BUT I backed them up in MAY. So for the past 3 months I did not back anything up, and all the extra contacts, ( all the “summer” contacts) were lost.
Hey I am not really one to “sweat the small stuff, so I just told everyone and everyone laughed at me, and now I am telling you go ahead and laugh- I wont be mad.

Man, Serena needs to give some of the other players blogging lessons. (*cough*Ana I.*cough*)
