I go to sleep with the prospect of a Federer-Nadal and Venus-Serena gold medal match looming and a wake up to these surprising results from Beijing. Serena lost. Fed lost. Serena’s gold medal campaign was ended by Sydney 2000 silver medalist, Elena Dementieva. Serena was up a set and 4-2 before Dementieva stormed back and took it 6-3 in the third. Seems like Elena has Serena’s number, she’s won in their last two encounters.
Even more surprising was James Blake’s upset of Roger Federer, in straight sets, too. Normally, I would be upset about this, but during the Olympics I seem to go all patriotic for some reason. R. Fed’s forehand was an unforced error machine and his serve was unreliable. Blake pretty much hit him off the court. Now, James is guaranteed to be in contention for a medal.
Crazy sport, tennis is.

This is Elena Dementieva’s look for the U.S. Open. And no, I am not joking. Yonex has made some pretty bad outfits in the past, but this one takes the cake. Whoever decided that denim would work needs to be fired. Elena is no Serena, thats for sure.

“She is the most important person in my life and all that I have today I owe it to her” is what Elena Dementieva was quoted saying about her mother, Vera, after her recent win in Dubai. Contradictory to this statement is this photo:
Poor mother Vera, doing all the hard work. Jesus, Elena, you’re the professional athlete, I think you are the one thats supposed to be pushing the cart, not your poor old mother.

World number 1, Justine Henin, lost in the quarterfinals of Dubai to Francesca Schiavone today with a score of 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4). Henin was previously undefeated at Dubai, winning 17 straight matches. Could this be the beginning of the end for Justine Henin? I sure hope so. I’m so sick of Justine winning everything.
In more quarterfinal action we saw a less shocking but still surprising upset. Elena Dementieva took out world number 2, Ana Ivanovic, in 3 sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. I know a lot of people are bashing Ana because of this recent loss saying that she’ll never win a grand slam and whatnot, but they really have to look at the big picture. First off, Dementieva is a two-time grand slam runner-up and former Top 5 player, not exactly pathetic. Also, Ivanovic is coming off an ankle injury that forced her to withdraw from Doha only a week before. So people, you can stop writing her off as an underachiever, she has plenty of time left.

In Throw Up the Deuce’s newest feature, we are keeping an eye out for any bagels given/received in “big” matches. In today’s edition Elena Dementieva dishes out a second set bagel to Switerland’s Patty Schynder. Not so often we see Elena on this end of a bagel.
