And More Upsets

World number one, Ana Ivanovic, made an early exit from the Championships in a shocking defeat to wildcard Jie Zheng of China. Her loss blows the top half of the draw wide open and gives Serena Williams a relatively easy path to the final.

In a surprising, not shocking, upset, last year’s finalist, Marion Bartoli, went out 4-6, 1-6 to Bethanie Mattek. But, did anyone really expect Bartoli to get much further?

Wow, the rankings are going to really be a clusterfudge after this event. I was thinking Sharapova’s loss alone would guarantee Serbians in the No. 1 and No. 2 rankings, which is pretty incredible *AND* that Dinara Safina might be able to make a huge leap in the rankings, too… Ivanovic’s loss muddles things, though – I think the Kooz can ascend to No. 1 now, depending of course on how far she advances…
