Throw Up the Deuce

Escape Act

World Number 1, Maria Sharapova, narrowly escaped a first round defeat today at a windy Roland Garros. Maria won the first set convincingly, 6-1, against 19 year-old Russian Evgeniya Rodina. But, as the wind picked up, Sharapova’s game got worse and worse. She went down a break in the second and never recovered, losing it 3-6. This was Rodina’s first ever Grand Slam main draw match and pushed Sharapova to the limit. In the third, both women held serve until 6-6 when Maria finally got the break and consolidated to win the match, 6-1, 3-6, 8-6. Sharapova hit a total of 17 double faults. “I just hung in there. It was far from my best tennis today.” Sharapova said after the match.
