R-Fed Survives in Estoril

Roger Federer came back from a set down to defeat 80th ranked, Oliver Rochus, of Belgium, 4-6,  6-3,  6-2. Roger hit 17 aces but had just as many unforced errors. This has been Federer’s worst start to the season since 2000. Federer hopes to get a fresh start this clay season by hiring Jose Higueres as his temporary coach. “I hope Estoril will pay off and I can do well at other events – especially the French Open.” R-Fed said of his new coaching arrangement.

(Really) Young Gun

15 year-old, Ryan Harrison of the USA, became the youngest player to win a main draw match on the ATP Tour since 1990. He had an impressive victory over Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas. After a little research, this is what we found on him:

Perhaps another great American player in the works?

The Cow on Ice Wins on Ice

Maria Sharapova won her first title on clay at The Bausch and Lomb Championships in Amelia Island Sunday over Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova, 7-6 (7), 6-3. This is Sharapova’s 3rd title of the year and improves her record to an impressive 22-1 on the season. This is also her 19th title of her career. Her movement on clay is improving, but she still needs to overcome all of her “cow on icyness” to win on the clay of Roland Garros. And if one thing is for sure about Maria, she wants the French. Bad.

I Hate Andy Roddick but….

I must say he looks pretty attractive with a mohawk. This new style is the result of a lost bet with his fiance, Brooklyn Decker. She beat him in their NCAA bracket.

The Cow on Ice Reminds Us Why She is the Cow on Ice

The Cow on Ice, Maria Sharapova, reminded us why she has that nickname today, just in case anyone has forgotten. Maria needed 3 hours and 27 minutes to defeat Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain in the 3rd round of the Bausch and Lomb Championships at Amelia Island. Sharapova won the first set in a tiebreak, but lost the second, 5-7. She fell behind 0-3 in the third but came back to win it in a tiebreak, 7-1. Good to see you’re still bad on clay, Maria, because the Cow on Ice is the greatest nickname ever.

Back on Track?

Amelie Mauresmo reached the quarterfinals of Amelia Island with her dramatic win over Agnieszka Radwanska on Thursday. Mauresmo came back from a set deficit to win, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6). Hopefully, this could be the tournament that gets Mauresmo back on track. Rumors of her retirement have been circulating since the U.S. Open of last year and quite frankly, I don’t think tennis is ready for her to leave just yet. With all of these tall, eastern European, ball bashers, taking over the game, tennis needs games like Mauresmo’s to show us how beautiful tennis can truely be.

Maria Sharapova Has Ugly Feet

Wow, Ashley Harkleroad…

Right when it seemed Ashley Harkleroad was going to get back to the top, another disaster happens. Harkleroad will be out until May, recovering from surgery to remove an ovary. She first noticed the pain in her abdominal region during her first round match against Razzano in Miami. She underwent and ultrasound and it revealed a blood-filled cyst on one of her ovaries. The doctor administering the ultrasound told her she was ok to play as long as she could endure the pain. She continued to play and during her match against Elena Vesnina the pain was so bad she could not even take a drink of water, leading to dehydration. That night Harkleroad spent several hours vomiting and growing weaker and weaker. Her boyfriend/coach finally called 911. In the ambulance, Ashley had a panic attack after being told the cyst had ruptured and was now bleeding internally. She was then taking into emergency surgery to remove the ovary. “The good news is that if I want to have babies, the doctors said ‘No problem,'” Harkleroad said. When asked if she would take legal action against the doctor who told her to continue playing she said, “Let’s not go there now,”
