World number 1, Justine Henin, lost in the quarterfinals of Dubai to Francesca Schiavone today with a score of 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4). Henin was previously undefeated at Dubai, winning 17 straight matches. Could this be the beginning of the end for Justine Henin? I sure hope so. I’m so sick of Justine winning everything.
In more quarterfinal action we saw a less shocking but still surprising upset. Elena Dementieva took out world number 2, Ana Ivanovic, in 3 sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. I know a lot of people are bashing Ana because of this recent loss saying that she’ll never win a grand slam and whatnot, but they really have to look at the big picture. First off, Dementieva is a two-time grand slam runner-up and former Top 5 player, not exactly pathetic. Also, Ivanovic is coming off an ankle injury that forced her to withdraw from Doha only a week before. So people, you can stop writing her off as an underachiever, she has plenty of time left.
